Bangladesh expands mango exports despite last year’s drop

China added to growing list of Bangladeshi mango buyers.
Bangladesh is preparing for a strong mango season in 2025, with a production target of 2.7 million metric tonnes across 205,034 hectares of land. Authorities are optimistic about both local yields and expanding exports, including to a new destination: China.
According to local media, the country currently exports mangoes to 38 countries, including the UK, France, and Canada. But for the first time, it will begin shipping to China, following a recent Memorandum of Understanding and registration with China’s customs authority (GACC). Exports to China are expected to begin in June 2025, potentially opening up significant new market opportunities.
Officials aim to export 5,000 metric tonnes of mango this season. In comparison, exports stood at just 1,321 tonnes last fiscal year — a drop from 3,100 tonnes the year before.
Bangladesh ranks seventh globally in mango production. Popular varieties include Fazlee, Himsagar, Gopalbhogh, Langra, and Amrapali, grown mainly in 15 districts, such as Rajshahi, Satkhira, and Chapainawabganj. Harvest will begin with Gopalbhogh mangoes from Satkhira starting 5 May.
Officials believe that with favorable weather and strategic export planning, this season could mark a major step forward for Bangladesh’s mango industry.
