Avocados: 9.7-fold increase in the volume exported by Kenya to the Chinese market

China opened its market to fresh avocados from Kenya in August 2022. Since then, the volumes shipped have increased considerably.

 

According to local media reports, China imported 4,324.1 tonnes of avocados from Kenya in 2023. This represents a 9.7-fold increase on the 443.6 tonnes imported by China in 2022. 

 

This is a remarkable performance, but Philip Mutooni, Director of the Kenya Avocado Exporters Association, points out that the European Union is the main market for Kenyan avocados, and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future.
