Last year, Kenya was the 1st African exporter of avocados and was among the top 10 producers in the world. Kenya exported only 10% of its total avocado production, indicating that there is still great potential for growth.
According to Benjamin Tito, director of HCD (Horticulture Crops Directorate) in 2020 Kenya was the 1st African exporter of avocados and was among the top 10 producers in the world. The volumes of Kenyan avocados reached 84.5 million kilos, or + 19.49% compared to the 70.3 million kilos recorded between January and November 2020.
After monitoring in the main production areas and in collaboration with other actors in the value chain, HCD decided to close the avocado harvest from November 15 to early January 2022, in order to prevent the export of 'immature avocados. The revision of this measure will take place on January 15, 2022 and should lead to the reopening of avocado exports.
