In Morocco, avocado production for the season running from October to April is expected to record a considerable increase in volume, of the order of over 20,000 tonnes compared with the previous season.
Local media quote Abdellah Elyamlahi, President of the Moroccan Association of Avocado Exporters, who predicts that avocado production this season could reach 60,000 tonnes. This represents an increase of 50% on the 40,000 tonnes of the previous season.
This season, according to Abdellah Elyamlahi, Moroccan avocados are smaller, which could affect their marketing to the main market to which Morocco exports: Europe, where competition is fierce with other avocado-producing countries.
Moroccan avocado production was only slightly affected by the drought. The northern regions of Morocco (Rabat, Kénitra, Larache, Moulay Bousselham), which account for 80% of the country's production, have seen good rainfall, and water reserves are high, unlike in the south of the country, such as Agadir and the Sahara.
