New container ships propelled by LNG and tests to develop a biofuel, CMA CGM confirms its commitment for the energy transition of maritime transport.
Already in 2017, the CMA CGMA group had chosen 9 containers powered by LNG (liquefied natural gas), becoming the first shipping company in the world to make this choice and showing its commitment to the protection of the environment and the energy transition of maritime transport.
During Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent visit to France, CMA CGM signed two agreements with CSSC (China State Shipbuilding Corporation) for the ordering of 10 new container ships of 15,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent).
These vessels, half of which will be powered by LNG, will significantly reduce emissions of CO2, sulfur, fine particles and nitrogen oxides. The other 5 ships of this order will be equipped with hybrid scrubbers allowing the elimination of sulfur emissions and fine particles.
Since March, CMA CGM, the port of Rotterdam, IKEA transport and logistics services, the GoodShipping program have been cooperating as part of a partnership to test and develop the use of sustainable marine biofuel. This 2nd generation biofuel is entirely derived from forest residues and waste oils, which should reduce the CO2 emissions of engines from fossil fuels by 80 to 90%, and virtually eliminate oxide emissions. sulfur (SOx).
IMO (International Maritime Organization) has set the target of reducing the average carbon intensity of maritime transport - the amount of carbon emitted for each transport unit - by at least 40% by 2030 and 70% by here 2050.
