Record for apple production

Production and global consumption increasing by approximately 5% and are at record levels for 2011/2012.
The USDA indicates the record of 65.1 million tons for production and 52.5 million tons for consumption which represents an increase of about 5% over the figures of the previous year. Trade in apples also increased with exports estimated at 5.4 million tons, mainly in the European Union.
The production in EU rose by nearly 10% and should reach 11.8 million tons and exports 1.5 million tons. Chinese production increased by 5% but China exports only 3% of its production while it is the second largest exporter. In the U.S., production is estimated at 4.2 million tons and exports at 833,000 tons or 4%. In Chile, the expected production is of 1.4 million tons and 750,000 tons for export.
