Danish A.P. Moller-Maersk, which for some 25 years has held the position of the world's leading shipowner in terms of container capacity, has been overtaken by MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company).
According to data compiled by the specialist firm Alphaliner, MSC has the capacity to transport 4,284,728 TEU (Twenty equivalent unit), which puts it in the lead ahead of Maersk with 4,277,274 TEU.
The Alphaliner TOP 100 ranking credits the 2 companies, MSC and Maersk, with a market share of 17%.
After MSC and Maersk come the French CMA CGM (3,166,621 TEU) with a 12.6% market share, the Chinese Cosco (2,932,779 TEU) with an 11.6% market share and the German Hapag-Lloyd (1,745,032 TEU) with a 6.9% market share.
