Fruit imports have increased in value in China

China imported more than 1.02 million tonnes of fruit in the first 2 months of the year. The value of these imports increased by 8% compared to the same period of 2019.
According to information from the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the country imported in the first 2 months of 2020 more than 1.02 million tons of fruit with a total value of $2.17 billion. This corresponds to an 11% drop in volume but an 8% increase in value compared to the same period of 2019.
The main categories of fruit by import value in January and February were fresh cherries ($1.17 billion or + 32%), bananas ($150 million, or -14%), fresh longans ($128 million , -19%), fresh grapes ($97 million, -27%), fresh dragon fruit ($94 million, + 66%), fresh blueberries ($81 million, + 21%) , fresh durians ($66 million, or -10%), fresh peaches and nectarines ($58 million, or + 30%). These categories represented 87% of the total value of imports.
In terms of supplier countries, for the months of January and February 2020, the top 10 are: Chile, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Peru, Ecuador, Australia, Taiwan, Indonesia, Italy (decreasing in value).
