Prices have doubled in 1 year and remain on an upward trend in the United States. In cause the increase in US and Chinese demand associated with the weakness of the productions of Mexico and California.
In the United States, the price of avocado Hass variety from the State of Michoacan (Mexico) is more than twice as high as it was a year earlier. That is the highest amount in 19 years.
American consumption of avocados has jumped from 3.5 pounds per capita in 2015 to 6.9 pounds per capita in 2015. Mexico provides 82% of avocados consumed in the United States.
The avocado, according to the professionals is an alternate crop, an abundant harvest will be expected next year due to limited harvest this year. Production in California is expected to decline by about 44% and Mexico's production is also lower than last year. Price levels will remain relatively high until fall and the next Mexican crop.
