Climatic challenges reduce Peruvian Hass avocado production

Weather is impacting the Hass avocado harvest in Peru this 2024, according to Juan Carlos Paredes Rosales of ProHass.

 

Normally, 700,000 tonnes were expected to be exported, but high temperatures and rainfall could reduce this by up to 25%. Especially in Trujillo and Chiclayo, avocados are smaller and there is less quantity.

 

Production on the north coast could fall by 30%, and by 15% to 20% in the centre and south. However, the Sierra shows a robust production, compared to a "small Colombia", shipping 300 containers a week.

 

This shortage could raise prices. Peru aims to export more to the US, taking advantage of a space that Mexico will not fill this year, and sees Europe as an attractive market for high prices. Asia receives quality from the Sierra, and new markets are being explored, such as Malaysia, while seeking to increase its presence in existing markets.

 

Chile stands out as a key market, buying up to 14% of Peru's avocado production.
