Sichuan Province hosts the world's largest kiwi gene bank.
China and New Zealand have agreed to develop a kiwifruit gene bank in Sichuan Province to improve cooperation in fruit research.
The joint laboratory was officially launched by Sichuan Provincial Academy of Natural Resources and New Zealand Plant and Food Research Institute in Chengdu on May 15. The goal is to advance the application of big data and gene science by integrating the resources, technology and know-how of both countries to develop and build the largest kiwi gene pool in the world.
The kiwi is native to China and was "exported" to New Zealand in 1904, under the name "Chinese gooseberry" or Chinese currant.
