In the south of Italy in the Puglia region, pomegranate cultivation is experiencing a production boom with + 1400% growth.
According to Coldiretti Puglia, based on ISTAT computer data, pomegranate cultivation is a great success. The increase in consumption is estimated at + 35% and that of production at + 1400%. The cultivated areas have increased from 67 hectares to more than 1000 hectares in the space of 5 years.
"The province of Tarento concentrates 40% of the Italian production of pomegranates. The juice of this fruit is one of the best means of fighting flu and colds, because it covers 40% of our daily vitamin C needs . The fruit of the pomegranate can be used not only in food but also in pharmaceutical products ", says the president of Coldiretti Puglia, Savino Muraglia.
In the Puglia region, there are mainly 2 varieties that are spreading: Akko and Wonderful. The 1st being the earliest, its campaign begins in the first 10 days of September with a productivity varying from 25 to 30 tonnes per hectare. For the other, on the contrary, the campaign begins in the second half of October and the productivity varies from 35 to 45 tons per hectare.
These pomegranates are also in demand by supermarkets, which have noticed the increase in consumer interest in these fruits.
Today, the countries in the Mediterranean basin where the culture is more widespread, like Israel and Spain, could become formidable competitors in the future.
