National onion production in the Philippines has risen sharply in recent years. Thanks to programs implemented by the DA (Department of Agriculture), the national onion supply is expected to meet demand until early 2025.
The success of onion production programs is prompting the DA (Department of Agriculture) to replicate them to increase other crops such as garlic.
Domestic garlic production represents only 2.6% of the 146,879 tonnes required for annual consumption. The various phases of the program include identification of the most suitable areas, plant selection, information and support for farmers.
The aim now is to increase national garlic production to cover at least 20% of national needs. And later to cover all national needs.
