The Dominican Republic is facing, for the second consecutive year, a critical situation in banana exports, as pointed out by the Banamiel group of the Northwest Line. Currently, Dominican banana exports have dropped to less than 200 containers per week, showing a decrease of more than 50% of the usual.
The decline in banana production has worsened since mid-2023 due to the unexpected appearance of the mite and adverse weather conditions. Banamiel reports that farms are experiencing historically low production levels, complicating the situation with low productivity and making recovery difficult.
An additional concern arises from the migration of numerous producers to the local market, putting additional pressure on exporters. In addition, crop shifts have led to an unpredictable drop in fruit availability. Uncertainty and concern are growing by the day, and the greatest alarm lies in the continued decline in export volumes in the short term.
