Peruvian exports of ginger, known locally as kion, reached 8,453 tonnes, generating revenues in excess of $22.6 million in the first quarter of 2024, according to local media.
This Peruvian ginger has captured the attention of the most demanding international markets such as the United States, the Netherlands, Canada and Germany, which together absorbed 92% of national production from January to March this year. Notably, exports to the US increased by 49% in value and by 14% to Germany, compared to the same period last year.
What was 2023 like for the Peruvian kion sector?
The year 2023 was exceptional for Peru, setting a milestone by consolidating its position as a leading exporter of ginger, with sales of 73,196 tonnes and a value of US$119.1 million.
This robust growth has been maintained over the last five years, with exports increasing by 26% in volume and 24% in value, reflecting sustained demand.
Peruvian ginger is predominantly grown in the Junín region, especially in the districts of Pichanaqui, Satipo, San Martín de Pangoa and Mazamari, which together account for about 90% of national production.
It is important to note that more than 60% of the country's total ginger exports are organic, demonstrating the relevance and recognition of this product in international markets.
