The start of the ginger season in Peru has seen an increase in the cost per kilogramme of the product and a decrease in its exports, both fresh and dried, during the first months of 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to a local media report.
They point to a notable reduction in cultivated areas, a consequence of low prices in previous years and overproduction in 2020. The impact of diseases such as Ralstonia and Erwinia, which have been aggravated by the adverse climatic conditions of the El Niño phenomenon, also persists.
The situation has resulted in a sustained rise in prices and an anticipated short harvest period for 2024, which is likely to end between November and December, rather than extending into February.
However, there is optimism for August, with an expected increase in the fresh ginger crop that could meet high demand, particularly for organic ginger. Farm management, prevention and monitoring strategies are being implemented to mitigate disease impacts and other future challenges.
