TISTR (Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research) launched 3 innovations in the packaging of fresh fruit for online sale, one of which successfully trapped the smell of durian.
These innovations, born from the 'Fresh Fruits Packaging Innovation for Online Selling' project, will contribute to increasing the added value of agricultural products, by multiplying the distribution channels of agricultural products which could not be exported due to COVID-19 .
"Selling online is one of the most effective ways for farmers and SMEs to try to sell their products under the COVID-19 situation," said the director of TISTR.
One of the innovations is a box that 100% prevents the smell from escaping from the container. This box, produced in cooperation with SAFER PAC Thailand, retains the smell of the fruit and also allows the humidity control inside. SAFER PAC used anti-fog PET plastic sheets to produce this box called "Ozone Box".
The second innovation could allow the excess supply of mangoes, estimated at more than 20,000 tonnes, to be disposed of, by promoting efficient online sales. The new packaging ensures good ventilation of the product, reduces heat and humidity. Its capacity is 5kg and the boxes are stackable.
The third innovation consists of a label to indicate the amount of residual sulfur dioxide (SO2) on the longan pulp. When applying the label to the longan, the color varies depending on the amount of sulfur dioxide detected. This innovation can prove useful both for domestic sales and for export. By advancing the quality level of Thai longan to be accepted on the international market.
