Higher volumes of avocados to come
MD
The U.S. market for avocados is expected to increase by 20% in volume after months of decline.
In 2010, the U.S. had produced 1.28 billion kilos of Hass avocados. This year, on the first three quarters, volumes fell causing a rise in prices.
The U.S. demand for avocados has increased by about 12 to 15% per year. The production was able to follow the growth in demand. But in 2011, the total available volume fell after a small crop in spring and summer in California and also due to a small winter harvest in Chile. According to professionals, the orientation of the price increase should be reversed by higher volumes available.
The 2012 harvest in California is expected to be significantly higher than in 2011, the U.S. production is estimated at 1.44 billion kilos of avocados. Mexico's exports are expected to exceed 13 to 15% compared to last year and the same for Chile.
By combining all these increases, the volumes in the U.S. market in 2012 will exceed 20% of those this year.
