Brazil is the world's sixth largest producer of avocados, and the country is currently expanding its plantations. This expansion responds to both increased domestic consumption and growing international market demands, according to the Brazilian Avocado Association.
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reports a 50% increase in the area under avocado cultivation, from 10,900 hectares in 2016 to 16,400 hectares in 2020, despite climatic challenges affecting the country's fruit harvest.
In addition to fruit, Brazil is also investing in by-products such as avocado oil, highlighting the potential for growth in this sector. The Southeast region, which includes São Paulo and Minas Gerais, leads the national production, contributing 83.2% of the total. However, Maria Cecilia Whately, president of the Brazilian Avocado Association, indicates that they are working to expand production in other states, such as Ceará, with a special focus on exports.
Whately stresses the importance of quality and certification to meet international market requirements. He also underlines the crucial role of marketing and communication strategies to increase consumption and production of avocados in Brazil.
Currently, producers are focusing on maintaining high quality standards to consolidate Brazil's position in the world avocado market.
