Artichoke production will reach 220 000 tonnes

 

 

 

This year the production of artichokes will increase and should reach 220,000 tons according to the Alcachofa de España organization. Spanish production totaled 222,300 tonnes of artichokes in 2014, followed by 214,200 tonnes in 2015 and 212,700 tonnes in 2016.

 

 

 

Artichoke crops now cover 15,300 hectares and are present in several regions of the country (Alicante, Murcia, Navarra, Granada).

 

 

 

Increase in area and production but also in consumption. The vegetable benefited from promotional campaigns which allowed to increase its consumption. The average per capita now reaches 2.5 kg whereas in 2014 the average consumption was less than 2 kg.
