The local media have announced the suspension of onion imports, which will last until September-October. This annual measure is designed to protect national production, which generally stands at 450,000 tonnes a year.
Domestic production more than covers domestic consumption, estimated at between 325 and 340,000 tonnes. But consumers often prefer imported onions for their superior quality.
The country's lack of storage facilities is also a problem for marketing domestic production throughout the year. However, industry players stress that quality is continuing to improve.
