This region is traditionally the area where the earliest cherries are picked. These are orchards in the open air, not under greenhouses, as in some areas. "This is the first Burlat cherry from the Northern Hemisphere and it is the cherry that is associated with the image of Turkey," says the Mayor of Kemalpaşa, who participated in the first harvest. He adds that this year there were no unfavorable weather events that could affect the quality and quantity of the crop.
This region has succeeded in developing both industrially and agriculturally, being declared a zone of agricultural site to protect a culture of cherry very old. The number of cherry trees is 3.5 million for some 6,000 producers and an estimated production of 70,000 tons.
The Cherry Festival, held every year in the last week of May, is another way of paying tribute to this fruit, which is of undeniable economic importance for Kemalpaşa and for Turkey in general.
