Fruit imports continue to rise
FJ
Nepal is concerned about its dependence on imports of fruit from India , its large southern neighbor.
The statistics made ??by NRB (Nepal Rastra Bank) show a steady increase in imports of fruits from India. Progress already achieved +23.9 % for the first two months of 2014-15 . This period Nepal imported fruits worth 561.2 million Rs in from India. To compare to 453.1 million Rs for the same period of 2013-14 and 296.3 million Rs for 2012-13.
Agricultural production in Nepal managed to meet only 30% of domestic demand. The rest must be imported. The country depends on India for a large number of fruits like bananas , apples, pineapples and melons.
Nepalese authorities deplore this dependency and want to increase domestic production to reduce certain imports.
