Almeria is the leading tomato exporting province in Spain. Since 2017, Morocco has been ahead of Almeria in the export of tomatoes, multiplying by three the volumes exported by Morocco compared to those of Almeria.
For Almeria, the data comes from Estacom (Icex-Tax Agency) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. For Morocco, data from FAO's FAOSTAT and the UN's COMTRADE were consulted.
Analysing the period 2013-2022, we found that until 2017 Almeria led in exports. However, in 2017 Morocco took the lead with 580.42 million kilos of tomato exported, surpassing Almeria's 473.98 million. Morocco's exports continued to increase to 1,028.19 million kilos in 2022, while Almeria's exports decreased to 386.77 million.
The cultivated area and production in Almeria have decreased in the last decade. Morocco has maintained a stable cultivated area, from 14,017 hectares in 2013 to 14,956 hectares in 2022. Almeria reduced its area from 10,358 hectares in 2013 to 8,205 hectares in 2022.
Production in Almeria fell from 962.67 million kilos in 2013 to 717.75 million in 2022. On the other hand, Moroccan production grew slightly from 1,293.32 million kilos in 2013 to 1,388.54 million in 2022.
