The logo "organic agriculture" directly on the products, DELHAIZE will remove plastic packaging for about twenty of its organic products.
The DELHAIZE Belgian distributor will offer its organic fruit and vegetables without packaging, the label "bio" will be directly affixed to the product thanks to "natural branding" laser marking technique.
Organic fruits and vegetables are often presented in plastic packaging to distinguish them from conventional products. The choice of removing these superfluous packaging will reduce the volume of packaging waste by about 13 tonnes.
Natural branding is used to mark letters or symbols on the skin of a fruit or vegetable. "This is a contactless method that is totally safe: the outer layer of the skin is depigmented with a high-resolution laser. It is a very superficial process that does not alter the Flavor, perfume or preservation of the product "DELHAIZE explains.
The first product to present this new device will be butternut squash. The distributor then plans to extend the operation to 20 other products such as courgette, cucumber, celeriac and fennel. But not everyone will be able to put on this new kind of logo, the skin of the tomatoes is too thin and too fragile for this process.
