This resumption of US exports comes after India lifted the 20% customs duty it imposed 5 years ago on apples imported from the United States in retaliation for the US administration's tariffs on steel and aluminium from India.
The local media reported a resumption of exports to India, apples being the most important agricultural product in Washington state.
For this 2023/24 season, total apple exports from Washington state to India are estimated at just over $16 million.
Prior to India's decision to impose tariffs, India was the 2nd largest export market ($120 million) for Washington apples in 2018. After India's decision, exports collapsed to just $1.3 million for the 2022/23 season.
