Upward trend follows the pattern of recent years
During the first four months of the year, Spain increased imports of fresh fruits and vegetables by 6% in volume and 16% in value compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 1.5 million tons and 1.8 billion euros. This upward trend follows the pattern of recent years.
From January to April 2024, vegetable imports reached 840,842 tons, showing a year-on-year growth of 9% in volume and 17% in value, totaling €641.9 million. Potatoes played a predominant role, representing 65% of the volume and 41% of the value of imported vegetables, with 548,000 tons and 264 million euros, according to data from the Customs and Excise Department of the Tax Agency.
In the case of fruits, imports stood at 730,265 tons, an increase of 3.6% over the first four months of 2023, and reached a value of 1,158 million euros, representing an increase of 15%. The main fruits imported were bananas with 122,897 tons, followed by apples with 69,813 tons, avocados with 66,212 tons, oranges with 65,148 tons and pineapples with 59,613 tons.
The statistics up to April reflect once again the vitality of the Spanish import market for most fruits and vegetables, generating concern about the increase in products of high relevance in the national production.
