Record export volume of avocado in Arequipa
VU
The 2021 avocado export season in Arequipa department (Peru) closed with the phytosanitary certification of 7.700 tons of the fruit, a record volume compared to what was registered in that region in recent years, according to the National Agrarian Health Service of Peru (Senasa).
It is an important growth compared to 2020, the year in which 3.900 tons were certified at the end of the season, according to Senasa.
The health authority controlled compliance with the phytosanitary protocols signed with the key importing countries (China, Chile, USA, Spain, the Netherlands), in order to guarantee the supply of pest-free high quality fruits.
Senasa ensures that before starting each season, they certify the places of production, verifying the proper handling of the crop in the field, and authorize the packing plants where the product is prepared for export.
Inspectors verify that avocados are free of regulated pests, plant debris, soil, and other contaminants. Also, the dry matter analysis is carried out to confirm the maturity of the fruit.
By complying with this evaluation, the Phytosanitary Certificate for export is issued, a document that guarantees that the product corresponds to international regulations and the Work Plans or Protocols of importing countries.
Finally, before shipment, the state of the transport container is verified to authorize its dispatch and when it closes, they put the security seal.
These phytosanitary actions are aimed to provide security to international markets, in addition to favoring the opening of new destinations to export Peruvian products.
