In order to combat soaring prices on the domestic market and avoid possible shortages during the month of Ramadan (11 March-9 April), the Pakistani government has temporarily banned the export of onions and bananas.
According to local media reports, the government has announced an immediate ban on the export of bananas and onions until 15 April 2024.
Pakistani exporters believe that those who have already received advance payment from their buyers will suffer huge losses and that this hasty decision risks tarnishing the country's image on international markets.
In the week preceding the government's decision, onion prices had risen by 34% and banana prices by 7%.
