Potato producers in Campo de Cartagena (Spain) are still waiting for official recognition to grant them protected designation of origin (PDO) and protected geographical indication (PGI).
Despite the fact that in May 2021 the ordinary Plenary approved a motion presented by MC requesting collaboration with the regional government for this purpose, almost three years later, the lack of response from the authorities leaves the producers in a vulnerable situation in the face of a new harvesting and marketing season.
Enrique Pérez Abellán, councillor of MC Cartagena, emphasises the importance of this measure to guarantee the production, quality and marketing of Cartagena potatoes in national and European markets, especially in a challenging context for Spanish agriculture.
The councillor stresses that farmers require concrete actions to maintain their competitiveness in the European market, such as obtaining the PDO and the quality seal requested in 2021.
In addition, the councillor highlights the challenges faced by producers due to competition from foreign countries and European agricultural policies, which affect both the marketing and prices of potatoes from Campo de Cartagena.
It is crucial that the regional government supports the process of obtaining the quality seals, given the economic importance of the Cartagena potato in the field of exports.
