Record volume expected for avocado production in Israel

The expansion of acreage and favorable weather conditions will lead, according to Israeli professionals, to a maximum harvest. The volume is expected to be 90,000 tonnes higher than the previous season.

 

In Israel a maximum avocado harvest is expected this year. Production could reach 210,000 tonnes, 90,000 tonnes more than the 120,000 tonnes of avocados harvested last year.

 

According to Yaron Belhassan, president of the organization of fruit producers, one of the reasons for this abundant production is the expansion in recent years in areas. With an additional 20,000 dunams (2,000 hectares), which brings to a total of 140,000 dunams (14,000 hectares) the areas of avocado cultivated in the country.

 

Half of the avocados harvested are intended for local consumption and the other half for export. The Israeli lawyer is exported to Europe and Japan with which a trade agreement was recently signed. Negotiations are currently underway with India and the United Arab Emirates.

 

In Israel avocados are harvested from October to June according to the different varieties.
