Almeria is consolidating its position as one of the leading provinces in the production of organic citrus in Andalusia, representing 20% of the total surface area dedicated to this type of crop in the autonomous community. According to an analysis by the Andalusian Regional Government's Price and Market Observatory for the 2022-23 season, Almeria is just behind Malaga and Seville in terms of organic citrus surface area.
The province stands out especially in organic mandarin production, being responsible for one out of every five mandarins sold in Andalusia and occupying second place in production, only behind Huelva, which dominates 48% of the market. As far as other citrus fruits are concerned, such as organic orange, Almeria also has a prominent position with 14% of the total, in a context where Andalusia concentrates 75% of the market for this crop at national level.
From an economic point of view, organic production offers tangible advantages over conventional production. For example, organic mandarins are sold at a higher price, with a difference of thirty cents per kilo compared to non-organic ones (1.42 euros compared to 1.10 euros). Although this gap has narrowed, early organic clementines reach the highest price at 1.56 euros per kilo. In the case of oranges, the price difference between organic and non-organic oranges is minimal, but organic oranges are still slightly more valuable (0.88 euros vs. 0.81 euros per kilo).
Although organic crops generate more income at source, non-organic crops continue to occupy the largest area. This situation reflects the growing importance of organic farming in Andalusia and, in particular, in Almeria, where there is a positive trend towards the expansion of this type of crop.
