The Spanish media indicate that, at the beginning of January, there are 20% fewer seed potatoes compared to the previous year, generating concern among farmers about the possibility of meeting the consumers' demand.
Yolanda Medina, president of the Interprofessional Potato Association of Castilla y León, highlights that, although there are fewer potato seeds this year, the caliber is larger. While the maximum caliber typically used in Castilla y León is 50 millimeters, this year calibers of 55, 60 and even 65 millimeters are offered. Thus, farmers might consider the ancient practice of dividing the tuber before planting.
Why is there less seed?
Last year, high temperatures affected the tuberization process of potatoes in the main producing areas, influencing seed production. In addition, the area dedicated to seed potatoes had decreased by 6% compared to the previous year.
High temperatures have also had a second relevant effect: they have led to an increase in the proliferation of insects, coinciding with the elimination of insecticides by the European Union. As a result, inspectors charged with certifying potatoes for use as seed have rejected numerous lots. This scenario poses additional challenges in the process of producing potatoes.
