Fruit and vegetable imports in Spain fall in October but grow in the year to date

According to data from the Customs and Excise Department, October saw a 4% decrease in the volume of imported fruits and vegetables, with a total of 320,588 tons (photo: agrometodos.com).
In October, imports of fresh fruits and vegetables into Spain experienced a 4% decrease compared to the same month last year, totaling 320,588 tons. This decline is mainly attributed to the decrease in imports of products highlighted during this period, such as potatoes, bananas and oranges. However, in the accumulated for the first ten months of the year, imports experienced a growth of 8%, with the aforementioned products also registering increases.
According to data from the Customs and Excise Department, October saw a 4% decrease in the volume of imported fruits and vegetables, with a total of 320,588 tons. Potatoes led imports with 76,141 tons, down 16%. In the case of fruits, the most imported were bananas, with 32,225 tons and 15% less, and oranges with 22,724 tons and 35% less.
Throughout September and August, there were also decreases in imports of fresh fruits and vegetables. However, strong growth in other months has led to an 8% increase in Spanish fruit and vegetable imports in the January-October period, totaling 3.3 million tons.
The aforementioned products, which are consistently the most imported throughout the year, also experienced growth: potatoes by 4%, reaching 845,427 tons; bananas by 29% more, totaling 334,393 tons, and oranges by 100%, totaling 228,164 tons.
In terms of value, imports experienced growth both in October alone and cumulatively. In October 2023, they increased by 10% compared to the same month of 2022, standing at 366 million euros. In the cumulative January to October, the value of purchases grew by 19%, totaling €3,638 million.
