In 2016, imports to France of Turkish cherries was suspended due to residues found in these fruits, namely dimethoate, which is toxic to wildlife and aquatic invertebrates.
Despite the warnings, the same substance has been found again in cherries from Turkey. French Ministry of Agriculture has therefore decided to continue to apply the ban on imports of cherries.
As was pointed out by the Trade Section of the Turkish Embassy in Paris to the Turkish Exporting Unions, this measure has also been applied to other countries with the same residue problem.
In order to try to solve this problem, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Livestock has sent instructions to the regional authoritieses in order to train cherry growers to not use this product.
