Despite pricing pressure, the latest MAPA figures confirm Spain’s continued leadership in tomato exports within the European market.

Spain’s tomato industry closed the 2024 export year with solid growth in volume but lower prices, according to provisional 2024 trade data published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) in September 2025. The report, “Informe de producto: Tomate fresco (07.02) Año 2024”, shows that Spain exported 674.4 million kilos of tomatoes — an 18% increase compared to 2023 — valued at €1.099 billion. However, the average export price declined from €2.10/kg to €1.63/kg, reflecting intensified international competition.

The European Union remained Spain’s main market, absorbing more than 590 million kilos of exports. Germany led with 216 million kilos (32% of total volume, €383 million), followed by France (+22.5%), the Netherlands, and Poland. Within the EU, Italy imported over 39 million kilos, while the United Kingdom, the leading non-EU buyer, purchased nearly 61 million kilos at €2.27/kg.

On the import side, Spain recorded a 12.1% drop, from 238.5 million kilos in 2023 to 209.7 million kilos in 2024, with Portugal overtaking Morocco as the main supplier. Despite pricing pressure, the latest MAPA figures confirm Spain’s continued leadership in tomato exports within the European market.
