Heavy rain pushes Taiwan’s agricultural losses above $6 million

Taiwan’s agricultural losses from the latest heavy rain had reached NT$190.72 million (about USD 6.03 million) as of August 29, according to the Ministry of Agriculture’s latest damage report.

Crop losses made up NT$163.55 million (about USD 5.17 million) of the total. Guava was the hardest-hit crop by value, with 266 hectares affected and losses estimated at NT$28.37 million (about USD 897,000).

Papaya followed with losses of NT$22.23 million (about USD 703,000), while spring onions accounted for NT$19.76 million (about USD 625,000). Food corn and peanuts were also among the main damaged crops.

Altogether, 2,618 hectares of crops had been affected, equivalent to 578 hectares of complete production loss. Yunlin, Chiayi, Kaohsiung, Pingtung and Tainan reported the largest overall agricultural damage, and the ministry said the figures were still being updated.
