Positive mid-season assessment for hazelnuts
MLK
Turkey, the world leader in hazelnut, exported 152,000 tons of hazelnuts between September 1, 2015 (effective date of the start of the season) and February 29, 2016, therefore 24 000 tonnes more than last season for the same period.
Although the prices are lower than last year, the President of the Union of Exporters from the Black Sea of Hazelnut and its products, which is also the Chairman of the group promoting the Turkish hazelnuts, is satisfied with the results of the first 6 months of the season, claiming that the producers managed to reach the threshold of 1 million and a half dollars, whereas before reaching a million dollars a year seemed a chimera.
The goal is to get 260 000 tonnes of exports during the 2015-2016 season.
Despite problems with some countries such as Russia and Ukraine, where a decline in export is found, Turkey continues to export its nuts in about 110 countries. Export to China has quadrupled this year and is expected to grow in the future.
