São Paulo continues to be the giant of fruit growing in Brazil. The state's fruit production in 2023 reached 14.5 million tonnes, according to data from the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA - APTA), affiliated to the São Paulo Department of Agriculture and Supply.
São Paulo stands out for the production of oranges (10.6 million tonnes), lemons (1.2 million tonnes), bananas (1.12 million tonnes), avocados (192.16 thousand tonnes) and persimmons (84.23 thousand tonnes).
Projections for this year suggest that the state's total production could match 2023 levels, although certain crops could exceed expectations.
For 2024, no significant changes in production area are anticipated.
According to data from FAESP (Centre for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics), avocado is experiencing growing demand and could increase production.
Fruit production in São Paulo not only satisfies domestic demand, but is also a key player in international trade. Citrus exports alone generate more than $2 billion annually.
To preserve the success of citrus, the São Paulo government has promoted a campaign from the Agricultural Defence Coordination (CDA) to fight against Greening, a disease that threatens orange crops and could seriously affect production if left unchecked.
In October 2023, the CDA established a channel for reporting abandoned or poorly maintained farms, with the aim of curbing the advance of this pest.
