L’exportation du citron turc se fait principalement dans les pays baltiques et en Irak.
In early May, the world situation of the lemon market had hoped that the price of Turkish lemon, stored in natural caves of Cappadocia, would increase dramatically, on the domestic market as well as on the international market.
The reality has not lived up to those expectations. The drop in tourism, slowing exports and the domestic consumption were the main causes that have prevented prices from rising.
These lemons are actually lemons harvested in March, packaged in a special way in wooden boxes and stored in natural caves in Cappadocia to be sold on the market in the summer. Their price has come on site for 4 months and so far, only producers who sold their fruits between 1.5 and 2 Turkish lira (1 Euro = 3.3 Turkish lire) have obtained profit. The current sale price of 3 Turkish lira does not cover the costs of packaging and transportation.
According to statistics from the Turkish National Statistics Institute, 451,000 tonnes of lemons were produced in the Mersin region in 2015. And a big part of this production is stored in natural caves of Nevsehir.
The export of Turkish lemon is primarily in the Baltic countries and Iraq.
