Ivory Coast is the host country of the 34th African Cup of Nations, the most important football competition in Africa, which takes place every 2 years.
Local media reported that the Ministries of Trade, Agriculture and Finance had announced the suspension of exports of certain agricultural products for 6 months, until July 2024.
The products subject to this export suspension are certain roots and tubers (manioc, yam), cereals (maize, rice, millet, sorghum), as well as fruit and vegetables such as plantains, chillies, aubergines, tomatoes and okra.
There is unlikely to be a causal link between the organisation of the African Cup of Nations and the suspension of exports. The government has stressed that the suspension is intended to ensure regular supplies to the domestic market and guarantee food security.
