Mexico has consolidated its position as the world's second largest producer and exporter of lemons and limes, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
With a 20.5% share of the global market and an annual growth of 8.4%, between 2019 and 2023 Mexico exported an average of 749,000 tons of these citrus fruits. The United States was the main destination for 98.7% of these exports, followed by the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, surpassing competitors such as South Africa and Turkey.
In 2023, exports reached 716,163 tons, generating revenues of US$838 million. Domestic lemon production reached 3.24 million tons, 4.5% more than in 2022, with Michoacán as the main producing state, followed by Veracruz, Colima, Oaxaca and Tamaulipas.
Likewise, lime production reached 9,302 tons in 2023, reflecting an increase over the previous year. This citrus fruit is especially popular in the cold months because of its high nutraceutical value and benefits for the immune system.
