Simplifying phytosanitary requirements allows Mendoza garlic to diversify its markets and increase its competitiveness.
Mexico's National Health Service (Senasica) has eliminated requirements such as fumigation and anti-sproutant certification for fresh garlic from Mendoza, Argentina. This decision simplifies processes, reduces costs, and opens new opportunities for local producers.
Negotiations, spearheaded by ProMendoza and Asocamen, began in July to request Senasa renegotiate phytosanitary conditions considered obstacles limiting access to the Mexican market. After several meetings, these barriers were removed, benefiting exporting SMEs.
Garlic, Mendoza's second most exported product, reached sales exceeding $120 million in 2023. However, 75% of exports go to Brazil, making market diversification crucial. Mexico, which imports approximately 19,500 tons annually, becomes a strategic partner. This opening strengthens Mendoza's competitiveness as one of the world's largest garlic exporters, behind China and Spain.
Furthermore, ProMendoza continues working on international negotiations to expand markets, including sweet onions in the United States and walnuts and plums in India and China.
