Berry acreage in Huelva grows despite climate challenges

Raspberry regained ground after two seasons of decline.
The Association of Berry Producers and Exporters of Huelva, Freshuelva (Spain), forecasts a 4% increase in the total area under berry cultivation in the province for the 2025 season. This growth reflects a recovery in raspberry planting, the consolidation of blackberry and blueberry crops, and a slight increase in strawberry area.
Strawberry cultivation
The strawberry area has grown by 2%, reaching 6,432 hectares. However, this increase has not been without challenges, such as problems in soil disinfection in nurseries, which caused high plant mortality after initial planting. This made it necessary to replant 15%-20% of the hectares, extending the process until the end of November. Despite these difficulties, recent rains have favored plant development, which generates optimism among producers.
Raspberries in recovery
Raspberry cultivation experienced a notable increase of 9.5%, reaching 1,930 hectares. This represents a recovery from the previous two seasons of decline. Thanks to its diversity of varieties, raspberries allow harvests in both autumn and spring, optimizing its profitability and presence in the markets.
Growth of blackberries and blueberries
The cultivation of blackberries showed the highest percentage growth, with an increase of 18%, reaching 168 hectares. This is due to the incorporation of new varieties that have had an excellent reception in European and national markets, positioning this fruit as a booming option.
Blueberries grew by 4%, consolidating its position as the second most important berry in Huelva, with 3,744 hectares. Its varietal diversification has made it possible to bring the harvest forward to December, which makes it more competitive with South American production and strengthens its presence in emerging markets in Europe. However, it faces challenges arising from competition from third countries, especially in spring production.
