Spain doubles consumption growth between January and April 2025

The 27th AECOC fruit and vegetable congress paid tribute to a competitive, resilient, innovative and sustainable sector.
Held in Valencia on May 27 and 28, the 27th congress focused on retail fruit and vegetable distribution brought together more than 700 delegates and 300 companies, some 30 of them supermarket chains. AECOC General Director José María Bonmatí and the Valencian Minister of Agriculture Dr. Miguel Barrachina paid tribute to the sector's entrepreneurs for their competitiveness and resilience. The latest climatic adversities such as recent droughts, the Dana, or external factors such as new environmental laws or the tariff war, are not significantly affecting the export capacity of Spain. The fruit and vegetable sector represents €20.5 billion in turnover. It also generates 13 million euros of exports in value or 9 million tons in volume, more than a third of it from the Valencian Community. Fruit and vegetables sector also accounts for 36% of Spanish exports of agricultural products. It is the leading European producer of fruit and vegetables and the 11th largest in the world.
+5.5% consumption growth from January to April 2025
Ignacio Biedma analyst at NIQ (Nielsen) confirmed that the year 2025 started with double growth in the consumption of fruit and vegetables in Spain, about 5.5% in value in the first quarter (5.2% for fruit alone). Fruit and vegetable consumption in 2024 represented 15.3 billion euros and about 6.0 billion tons. Total sales value increased by +6.4% sales value in 2024 and +8.7% from January-April 2025. Consumption growth was +2.8% volume 2024, +5.5% this year. The average basket value increased +2.2% in 2024, +3.1% from January to April 2025.
