The EU imported from South Africa less lemons (-20%) but more grapefruits (+ 4%) compared to 2016, according to CGA estimates.
The share of lemons exported to the European Union fell by 20% according to CGA (Citrus Growers Association), the South African Association of Citrus Producers.
In its recent estimate, CGA says that this year only 12% instead of 32% of lemon exports have taken the lead of the EU. CGA estimates that barriers to trade in EU markets explain this decline by 20% compared to 2016 figures.
These volumes of lemons that did not enter the EU were shipped to Russia (17% this year vs. 6% last year), Asia (19% vs. 13%) and the Middle East 47% against 43%).
