Univeg acquires shares in Alara as it looks to increase its presence in the fig and cherry growing sector.
The shareholders of Belgium-based fresh produce supplier Univeg have announced a deal that will see the company become a strategic shareholder in Turkish fresh fig and cherry specialist Alara, subject to the approval of the antitrust authorities.
The gradual share purchase will see Univeg take advantage of Alara's "high quality product, strong brand name and innovative agricultural practices" to further develop Turkey's cherry and fig export potential.
Hein Deprez, CEO of Univeg, said: "The partnership with this leading Turkish company will mean a further extension to Univeg's product range and will provide a complement to our current activities."
Alara's operational structure will remain unchanged, with Kerim Taner remaining as CEO and chairman of the company.
"This strong synergy will fasten Alara's global growth strategy, strengthening its worldwide leadership in cherries and figs. By using our partner's global expertise and structure, we will expand our product range," Mr Taner added.
