German exporter shares apples forecast
Some European countries are expecting to have less apples 2019/2020 season, others forecast bigger crops. Met during Asia Fruit Logistica in Hong Kong Dr. Berndt Falkenau, VEOS Vertriebsgesellschaft für Obst mbH managing director shares how they expect apples season in Germany to look like.
“In Germany we expect normal crop amount, - starts Dr. Falkenau and adds: “There will be less apples in Poland, which is already obvious. But for our growers in Germany we expect to have average quantities”.
According to 2019 European apple and pear crop estimate Spain, France and Portugal are the countries expecting to have bigger apple crop, compared to previous season. Germany is expected to harvest around 912,000 tons of apples. This is 17% less than in 2018 season with 1,093,000 tons. But this year’s amount will look the same as average for three last years.
As for quality of apples Dr. Falkenau adds: “Quality for apples will be good. Some minor areas had some problems during the summer because of hail and sunburn. But generally quality will be good. Taste will be excellent, because we had a lot of sunshine during the summer, so we now have a lot of sugar in the fruit”.
