The season starts badly for British asparagus

British asparagus is scarce and producers hope for good weather in June - the month that the country will celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen.
A very wet April has caused a shortage of most British asparagus.
The short season, from May 1 through June, could be even shorter this year. The frosts and rains of April have cooled the soil and prevented the normal growth of asparagus. The bad weather has led to
the cancellation of the British Asparagus Festival, where many fields were flooded.
The very low production caused a price hike up to 10 pounds / kg (€12.38). Producers hope a rapid improvement in the weather could save the season and a sunnier June to encourage the growth of asparagus.
