For the Italian region Emilia Romagna, after last year's catastrophic production, 2020 production looks much better but the total volume is expected to be below the 2015-2018 average by around 14%.
According to the OI Pera Coordination Committee, pear production in Emilia Romagna is estimated at around 424,000 tonnes. This represents a volume 14% lower than the 2015-2018 average, and a volume similar to 2012.
The frost in late March and early April seems to have affected early varieties, such as Carmen and Santa Maria. For the William variety, production is estimated at -15% on the 2015-2018 average. For the variety Abate Fetel, production is estimated at around 221,000 tonnes, 11% less than the 2015-2018 average.
For Italian production as a whole, other production areas showing similar situations to the Emilia Romagna region, the estimates are 642,000 tonnes, or 12% less than the average for the period 2015-2018.
